February 4, 2011 – Green Bay, Wis — A new national college football award has more than one tie to Wisconsin and Titletown. Imaginasium, a Green Bay-based brand experience firm, has been involved with launching the new Paul Hornung Award, working with former Packers great Paul Hornung and the Louisville Sports Commission on development and promotion for the inaugural national award recognizing the most versatile player in major college football.

Imaginasium became involved in the award through the efforts of Jeremy Borseth, a Green Bay native, VP of Interactive for the Hornung Award, and former standout punter at the University of Louisville. “As a new member of our national marketing committee, Imaginasium graciously donated its services to some fantastic ideas promoting the banquet and for materials at the event itself,” said Borseth. “The banquet was sold out weeks in advance, and it was truly a wonderful evening to honor both the winner and Paul Hornung. We look forward to working with Imaginasium in the years to come.”

The award’s first-ever winner was two-way starter Owen Marecic of Stanford. On the season, Marecic rushed 23 times for 46 yards and five TDS and was fifth leading tackler with 51 stops. Marecic earned honorable mention All-America, first team All-Pac-10 Academic honors and second team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the top scholar-athlete in college football.

The award was presented January 27 in Louisville before a sellout crowd of over 600 people. “Paul Hornung is still larger than life, and it was great seeing his enthusiasm for the game,” said Pat Hopkins, president of Imaginasium. “We were able to spend time with both Owen and Paul. Both are impressive in their own right. But what’s most impressive is their human side and their commitment to excellence for themselves and their teams.”

“Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi said it best when he called Paul Hornung ‘The most versatile man ever to play the game,’” said Karl Schmitt, Louisville Sports Commission executive director and former sports information director at the University of Miami. “The landscape of college football is changing and many of the nation’s most talented players have opportunities to excel at multiple positions. Paul Hornung’s stature as a multi-position star at Notre Dame and the Green Bay Packers makes him the perfect namesake of a national award that recognizes the most versatile players in college football.”

Hornung, the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner, NFL MVP in 1961 and member of both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame, played quarterback, halfback, fullback, place kicker, punter, and defensive back at Notre Dame and was a multi-threat back and place kicker for the title town Green Bay Packers. He held the NFL single-season scoring record for nearly 46 years.

To this day, Paul is passionate about the game. “Football had a tremendous impact on my life,” said Hornung. “I still love college football and follow it closely. The idea of giving back to college football by recognizing players who excel at multiple positions is exciting. This award is not necessarily about speed, strength or statistics. The award is about players who compete consistently at a high level and contribute to their teams in every way possible.”
